Tiny Seed Farm VEGETABLE FIELD TEAM

Tiny Seed Farm is a Pittsburgh Area market garden. We grow using natural methods. We produce a wide array of vegetables, flowers, mushrooms, shoots and micro-greens. Our diverse variety of vegetable crops and products service a number of outlets including our CSA, farmer’s markets, restaurants, grocery stores and more. We are looking for individuals with farm experience to join our team!

Duties

  • General farm labor / grounds keeping / basic maintenance
  • equipment operating (walk-behind tractor,mowers, trucks, tractors etc)
  • General cultivating, soil amending, and spraying.
  • Seeding/greenhouse work, transplanting, harvesting.
  • Washing and packaging produce for sales

Qualifications

  • Organic vegetable/flower farming experience is preferred, but we will provide training for the right candidate.

  • Positive attitude is a MUST. Should be flexible, and have a self-starter work ethic, ready to tackle whatever tasks need to be done.

  • Organized.

  • Detail oriented.

  • We’re looking for a true team player, who is ready to learn, and grow with our small farm team.

 Preferred candidate

  • 2year+ working on a market garden or organic farm.

  • Strong working knowledge of small engine equipment and maintenance.

  • Strong knowledge of crop varieties, seedlings, soil types and condition

Physical Requirement

  • Able to lift 50lbs.

  • Repeatedly kneel, bend and squat.

  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions [hot, cold, wet and windy] (we grow year round).

 Compensation and benefits

Team members start with a 15 work day probationary period working 35+ hours per week. $13 per hour depending on experience.  After the "probationary period" the team member will receive pay from $15+/hr depending on experience

Flower Harvester 

As a vital member of our team at Tiny Seed Farm and Fleurs, the Flower Harvester plays a crucial role in the successful harvest and delivery of over 150,000 stems of cut flowers each season. This position is essential in supporting our commitment to providing high-quality products to the market.

Duties:

  • Harvest flowers in collaboration with Tiny Seed team members.
  • Organize harvested flowers in the farm walk-in cooler
  • May include field work such as transplanting and weeding if the harvest concludes early

Hours:

  • Up to 21 hours per week
  • Work hours ranging from 6 am to 2 pm (may start later)
  • Days: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
  • Employment period: First week of June through the last week of September, with potential for additional work in October

Required Qualifications:

  • Desire to learn and ability to remember plant names
  • Ability to follow detailed directions
  • Strong communication skills
  • Capability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Physical ability to engage in active work daily on uneven terrain
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Reliable transportation to and from the farm 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One full season or more working on a production farm
  • Knowledge of cut flower names

Flower Field/Production Crew

Our field/production crew plays an integral role in the day-to-day activities on the farm. Field/production crew members are primarily responsible for the growing, maintenance, and harvesting of high quality cut flowers for farmers markets, wholesale accounts, csas, and special events. 

Duties:

  • Harvest flowers in collaboration with Tiny Seed team members
  • Organize harvested flowers in the farm walk-in cooler
  • Planting – from greenhouse seeding work to transplanting by hand 
  • Cultivation of field crops – including hand weeding and hoeing
  • Participate in a wide range of other fieldwork including (but not limited to): bed preparation, fertilizing, netting, trellising, mulching, pruning, irrigation set up, weed management, and pest/disease management, and general farm work
  • Work alongside the harvest crew members to harvest flower crops using proper harvest techniques and post-harvest treatments to fill wholesale orders and prep for csa/market
  • Help arrange and organize bouquets for CSA, markets, and other retail orders/events. This includes prep such as bucket washing/filling, processing flowers, building bouquets, wrapping bouquets, and organizing/packing 

Hours:

  • Part- time approximately 24 hours/wk and Full-time approximately 32- 40 hours/week (may be more during peak season)
  • Work hours ranging from  7am to  5pm (may start later)
  • Days: Monday- Friday
  • Employment period: March through the last week of September, with potential for additional work in October

Required Qualifications:

  • Hardworking, energetic and self-motivated - can work quickly and efficiently with high attention to detail and quality control 
  • Can work long hours in all weather conditions (i.e. cold, wet, hot, humid) while maintaining a positive attitude and morale  
  • Fast learner, asks questions, and is willing to accept feedback. 
  • Can work quickly individually and/or in a team environment to produce top-quality outcomes
  • Ability to follow detailed directions
  • Strong communication skills
  • Physical ability to engage in active work daily on uneven terrain. 
  • Reliable transportation to and from the farm 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one full season or more working on a production farm, cut flower growing experience preferred but not necessary 
  • Knowledge of flowers and floral design experience is a plus!
